Success can be defined as the achievement of specific outcomes or goals that an individual or organization sets for themselves. It involves knowing what you want to achieve rather than focusing on what you don't want.
To ensure a greater commitment from our minds, it is important to be as precise as possible when defining the desired outcome.
Vague goals tend to lack clarity and may result in less commitment and focus. However it is also important to note, that the tangible goal is often just a vehicle towards the experieince we hope to have. So in many ways, a successful person is not only what they have achieved or accomplished, it is more often who and how they are in the world. It is important to clarify both the goal and the experience you hope to have in achieving it.
From a coaching perspective, success is not just about achieving specific goals, helping individuals tap into their potential to overcome obstacles, and create a meaningful and purposeful life. A coach understands that success is unique to each person and focuses on guiding clients to define their own version of success.
I have listed a few coaching methods to help you start to unpack what goals and success you want for yourself.
A coach helps individuals set clear and achievable goals, develop effective strategies, and cultivate the mindset and skills necessary for success. Ultimately, success in coaching is about empowering individuals to create a life that aligns with their values, passions, and aspirations.
Five steps towards your success:
1. What do you want? How will it feel?
It is important to have a clear and specific outcome in mind. The more precise your goal, the more committed your mind becomes. This is where the reticular activating system (RAS) comes into play, as it helps our brain focus on and identify with what we want to achieve. It is also important to have a system to identify how you will know once you have achieved your goal. What you hope to feel and what you imagine would be different in your life are good indicators of arriving at your success.
2. What steps are required to reach your goal?
Thinking alone cannot replace taking action. It is necessary to move in the direction of our dreams and actively work towards our goals. Simply wishing for something without taking action will not lead to results. We must be willing to step out of our comfort zone and let others know about our aspirations.
3. Is it working?
We need to be aware of the feedback we receive from our actions. Tuning into what is actually happening, rather than what we wish or prefer to happen, allows us to adapt and make necessary changes to our plans and our actions. This helps us stay on track and make progress towards our desired outcomes rather than wishing things were different. Even when we fail, we succeed in knowing what doesn’t works and we can reapply ourselves more affectively.
4. What will block your progress?
Being adaptable is crucial for success. We need to be open to learning, growth, and changing our approach when needed. This is when we need to refer back to our goal and our intention to keep us on track rather than get stuck in where we are stuck. Identifying possible blocks and how we will meet them prepare you and condition you to stay in a growth mindset and meet challenges with curiosity rather than failure.
5. How do you want the experience to be?
Our physiology, including our posture, breathing, and overall state of relaxation or tension, plays a role in our success. We should carry ourselves in a way that aligns with the results we want to achieve. Additionally, modelling excellence from those who have succeeded in our desired field can improve our psychology. Who do we respect and admire, how can we mirror them? This involves having a growth mindset, being open to learning, and applying what we learn immediately.
By following these five principles, you can enhance your chances of achieving success in various aspects of life. It is important to set small and large goals in life, remembering that to climb a ladder is one rung at a time. It is also important to not shift your goal as you get closer. Most importantly it is good to know when you arrive at your goal, to appreciate your success and check in with your feeling. Why not decide in advance how you will know when you are successful, and how to celebrate yourself.
