Navigating Deep Fatigue & Supporting Ourselves Forward

Updated: Dec 10, 2023

Many individuals are experiencing a unique phenomenon known as deep fatigue as we leave 2023 behind us. This exhaustion stems from the intricate process of our nervous system needing a reset post-COVID, whereby the last few years have left many people feeling drained and overwhelmed world wide.

Deep fatigue is a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, where the body's nervous system underwent a process of heightened stress. This is not just a deep fatigue caused by physical exhaustion but also encompasses mental and emotional fatigue as well. This nervous system resetting may have occurred from an accumulation of local and global impacts including the uncertainty of these past few years, such as the inflation and interest rate rises, changes to the work place and work place culture, political unrest, global awareness around the "Me too" movement, a focus on "Black lives matter", concern for our environment, and recovering from the physical, and emotional toll of the virus itself. The Impact on Daily Life: Deep fatigue can manifest in various ways, affecting our overall well-being and productivity. Individuals may experience persistent tiredness, difficulty concentrating, decreased motivation, and heightened emotional sensitivity. These symptoms can significantly impact our ability to perform daily tasks, maintain relationships, and pursue personal goals. Supporting Ourselves in 2024: 1. Prioritize Rest and Recovery: Recognize the importance of restorative sleep and allocate sufficient time for quality rest. One of my favourite things to do is to book a full or a half day once a month to just switch off the world and go day camping. I find somewhere beautiful, turn my phone off and just read, nap and rest. How could you prioritize rest in 2024. 2. Practice Mindfulness and Stress Management: Engage in mindfulness techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or yoga to reduce stress levels. Prioritizing self-care activities that promote relaxation and rejuvenation can help alleviate deep fatigue. In addition to mindfulness I have found routines have been incredibly supportive. Even if you are only committing to one yoga class a week, or one walk in the forest a month. Let it become a routine so you can truly lean in to it. What is one thing you would like to do regularly? 3. Maintain a Balanced Lifestyle: Adopt a well-rounded approach to self-care by incorporating regular exercise, nutritious meals, and hydration into your daily routine. Physical activity can boost energy levels and improve overall well-being. We know this is true, but it can be so difficult to stay motivated. Recently a friend of mine told me that her and her partner listen to the same podcast while they go walking once a week together. They are in connection, moving and resting into their own experience. How can you commit to your health? 4. Seek Social Support: Connect with loved ones, friends, or support groups to share experiences and seek emotional support. Engaging in meaningful conversations and fostering social connections can help alleviate feelings of isolation and fatigue. This is especially true if you are working from home and don’t have that regular social connection. Be sure to consider where you might get to feel community and connection, if only just at your local cafe. 5. Set Realistic Expectations: Be mindful of your limitations and avoid overcommitting yourself. Set realistic goals and break them down into manageable tasks. Prioritize your responsibilities and delegate or seek assistance where necessary. This is where having a coach and a counsellor can be helpful to support you in setting up your goal, and supporting you when and if you meet resistance, or celebrates you in your success. Please reach out so we can help tailor your 2024 goals so you can leave the fatigue behind and feel excited by what is to come. Conclusion: Deep fatigue presents unique challenges for individuals worldwide. By understanding the causes and impact of deep fatigue, and implementing practical strategies to support ourselves, we can navigate this period with resilience and regain our vitality. Remember, self-care and seeking support are crucial in overcoming deep fatigue and embracing a healthier and more fulfilling life in the coming year.
